Health Insurance Overview

Private health insurance offers you greater control over your treatment choices should you or your family require hospitalisation or treatment by ancillary providers.

Having private health insurance covers you for the unexpected. It ensures that your family’s well-being is protected while giving you financial peace of mind by covering you for the potentially high cost of hospitalisation and ancillary services.

In general terms, hospital health insurance covers you for accommodation and other costs related to in-hospital treatment, such as, theatre and labour ward fees, intensive care unit and pharmaceuticals administered while an in-patient.

It also covers you for the ‘medical gap’, being the difference between the Schedule Fee for medical services and the 75% benefit paid by Medicare for in-hospital treatment.  For example, if your operation has a Schedule Fee of $100, Medicare will pay a benefit of $75 while your health fund will pay the $25 difference.

Transport Health also has medical practitioners participating in its ‘Access Gap’ initiative.  Should your doctor charge more than the Medicare Schedule Fee, we can cover a part or all of this amount, minimising your out-of-pocket expenses for medical services.  A list of participating practitioners can be viewed on the Participating Providers page.  As doctors are not contractually obligated to participate in Access Gap, you should discuss with your practitioner before beginning treatment whether he/she is an Access Gap participant.

Additional information on Government initiatives such as Lifetime Health Cover, the 30% Federal Government Rebate and Tax Benefits are discussed in the Australian Health System page.

Ancillary, or Extras, provides cover for paramedical services such as, dental, optical, physiotherapy, chiropractic, acupuncture, and so on.

Transport Health has also negotiated special arrangements with Extras health care providers to participate in programs that minimise or eliminate out-of-pocket expenses for our members.  Participating practitioners are listed in the Participating Providers page.
