Lifetime Health Cover

A loading is applicable to hospital table premiums when individuals fi rst join a fund after the age of 30 years. The loading rises in increments of 2% each year after the age of 30. The loading applies for a continuous period of 10 years. The maximum loading for a person joining hospital cover is 70%. After contributing for 12 months continuous hospital cover individuals can cancel their hospital cover for a combined period of up to 1094 days over their lifetime and resume their private hospital cover without additional Lifetime Health Cover (LHC) penalty. Normal waiting periods will apply when rejoining the Fund.

Federal Government 30%, 35% & 40% Rebate

All eligible Members, regardless of income level, are entitled to a rebate of 30% on their premiums. On 1 April 2005, two additional rebates were introduced - 35% for Members aged 65-69 and 40% for Members aged 70 or more. Typically, the rebate is applied as a reduction in the premium. Alternatively, it is payable as a lump sum through your tax return or claimable directly from Medicare.

Medicare Levy Surcharge

Individuals who have a taxable income in excess of $77,000, or couples with a combined income of more than $154,000, will have to pay a Medicare Levy Surcharge of 1% of their taxable income if they do not have Private Health Insurance. Families have an additional $1500, income threshold for each child after the fi rst. Membership of any of Transport
Health’s hospital tables will exempt you from the surcharge.
